Sguardi Altrove International Women's Film Festival is an event whose aim it is to encourage a reflection on topics relevant to women, articulated in their specific cultural, political and social context, and represents an ideal site for intercultural dialogue and a critical reflection on "other" cinematographies.
Sguardi Altrove has always been exploring work from different countries and cultures, promoting in particular the circulation of films that are less likely to have access to commercial venues.
The festival is made up of three competitive sections - Nuovi Sguardi (international feature film award), Sguardi (s)confinati (Italian film award), Le Donne Raccontano (international documentary award) - and of numerous non-competitive sections, such as Sguardi Incrociati, devoted to the best Italian documentaries and shorts, or Conflitti: set di guerra, which presents films on war zones all over the world.
The festival has succeeded over the years in winning over a diverse public as well as the national and international press, gradually becoming one of the most important cultural events in the city of Milan, thanks not only to the high quality of films selected but also to a variety of parallel events such as photographic exhibitions, installations, live performances and much more.
Since 2007, the festival's non-competitive sections are also open to male directors (competitive sections are still restricted to women). This decision has been reached in the firm belief that debate and dialogue between different "worlds" represent an opportunity for civil society to progress.
